BIO
Amy Haigh (B. 1991) is an artist & researcher focusing on methods of anthrozoological† storytelling through objects and installation.

Drawn to the concept of rituals / desire / play working as tools to encourage empathy, she uses a range of sculptural media to both present ︎︎ unearth unseen ecological narratives.
Her work imagines objects from speculative worlds in which all living beings are understood as fully interconnected and categorisations are highly fluid. Sometimes playing with the notion of the nonsensical, her work attempts to awaken alternate ways of ecological thinking and dreaming.

She prefers that her work is accessible and presented in public space, with priority given to community-led projects. With professional training and experience in animal care and many hours spent conducting field research, she enjoys creating work that ranges from highly functional to purely speculative.
Amy received an M.A. in Information Experience Design from the Royal College of Art in 2019, with a B.A. (Hons) in Graphic Design from University of the Arts London.
Please feel free to get in touch for any commissions, collaborations, or conversations related to the intersection of ethology / ecology / anthrozoology and art. This includes sculpture, consultation, research, art workshops, and digital work.

Amy also works as a freelance Graphic Designer, specialising in environmental and exhibition graphics, interpretation design, and image work within the cultural sector, see amyhaigh.com for more information.

The Layered Woodlouse Mounds acts as monuments to their namesake species. Although the occupants are not seen for the most part, the human viewer can expect that they are there and occasionally witness them leaving and entering.

Woodlice are drawn to the damp, dark, and warm conditions created beneath and between the layers.
The surface of the mounds rise from the grass to create concealed chambers. Under the exterior surface is a stepped cylindrical form, this is placed on top of a decomposing wood stump that lies at the centre of the mound. All layers contain holes through to the next.

Other invertebrate species are also attracted to these conditions and can live harmoniously with woodlice, for example small spiders, slugs, and caterpillars. The mounds do not, however, provide much protection from woodlouse predators—e.g. larger spiders, frogs, slowworms, and small mammals. These species may occasionally feed on the woodlouse, keeping the ecosystem in balance.

The Mounds were funded by the RECLAIM Network via Surrey Hills Arts. They were exhibited as part of RECLAIM Network Conference 2023 and at RHS Hampton CourtPalace Garden Festival 2023. They have now found their permanent home in the Watts Gallery Artists’ Village grounds.

The Reconfigured Cycle Rack is a sculptural habitat installed as a public art piece on the University of Surrey's Stag Hill campus. The piece makes use of reclaimed cycle racks from the uni grounds. The racks were cut down into around 600 pieces and reassembled to form a dome structure that houses a log pile in its centre.
Research focused mainly on slow worms and stag beetles as protected species present in the area. Decaying log piles are essential for stag beetles as a food source, with the material also attracting invertebrate species for slow worms to feed on. The metal pipes absorb heat and protect the log pile from the direct sun, in this way they form a haven for slow worms searching for a place to eat or bask. The sculpture was commissioned for Surrey Hills Arts' HABITAT project. The project took a small area on campus at the University of Surrey, transforming it through planting and the introduction of four sculptural habitats to support local wildlife with support from Surrey Wildlife Trust.

	The Microhabitat Sculpture Workshop Series

explores the concept of object-making to connect people and wild animal life. Participants are presented with materials and information about wild animals in their local area, they are then tasked with creating objects that could be interacted with by these animals. This could be anything from a home, a bath, a place to eat, etc. Prompts include: why this animal? how will the animal use it? how does the object function in the animals life? Participants are then able to take their object away with them to be installed in their local green space (garden, park, etc). The workshop aims to encourage playfulness, curiosity and empathetic-thinking, with an emphasis on the idea that no object or creation process is ‘wrong’. In this workshop, the process is as important as the outcome. It has so far been taught at the Hive Guildford, Kings College Guildford, Surrey Hills Wood Fair.

Attractive and easily maintained, for humans and birds alike: the Two-Part Birdhome is a catalyst for long-lasting bird—human friendships. The Two-Part Birdhome provides a safe and comfortable dwelling for its residents, as well as an attractive and environmentally-friendly addition to the landscape for the bird-watcher. As the name suggest, the home has only two parts, both made with high density cork. This makes the home sustainable, weather-proof, and
non-toxic. The two parts slot together with friction-fit tabs, making it easy to assemble and dissemble for cleaning. The home can be mounted to a tree or post using a nail, cable tie, or string through the reinforced mounting hole. The Two-Part Birdhome was shortlisted for the Legendary Bird Home competition in 2020.

Intermediate Object 01 explores the shared concepts of desire and value between two species (specifically an Australian bowerbird and the general public in the UK). The project begins with research into an individual bowerbird (‘Errol’), housed in Melbourne Museum, and his collection of blue plastic objects. The object’s shape reference street furniture in central London, hoping to act as souvenirs to the public. These shapes were carefully selected to be desirable to both Errol and the public, and practical for them both to collect. Intermediate Object 01 has been exhibited alongside the other objects in the series, at the Royal College of Art and Birmingham Open Media in 2019. The series has been discussed in greater length in a conversation with Ned Dodington of the Expanded Environment here.

Intermediate Object 02 begins with the ontological concept of a spoon. With mentorship from designer and silversmith Andreas Fabian, the concept unpicks the potential physical properties and affordances of an object with this title. The piece takes the form of video documentary following the design process of the object as its shape, colour, and texture is tested and altered for both human and nonhuman users. The process employs a re-written version of the human-centred design process and takes inspiration from scientific method†. The final spoon is a compromised and seemingly nonsensical inter-species object that embodies the similarities and differences in bodies and minds between species. Intermediate Object 02 has been exhibited alongside the other pieces in the series, at the Royal College of Art and Birmingham Open Media in 2019. The series has been discussed in greater length in a conversation with Ned Dodington of the Expanded Environment.

† In this case, the spoons were tested on any willing participant, both human and bird. The bird species most willing to participate was Parus major.
